Planting and Soil Tips
Successful Container Gardening
-
Provide for adequate drainage. Fill bottom 1/3rd
of pot, with bark, gravel or emplty plastic cell packs. cover
drainage material with landscape fabric, so soil will not sink into
drainage material. For large pots only 14" - 16" of soil.
-
Use good soil. Soiless mixes are lightweight but
are sterile. Use a mix of 2 parts topsoil to 1 part composted cow
manure, 2 handfuls of Canadian peat, 2 handfuls of sand and 1 cup Osmocote,
a slow release fertilizer. Mix all ingredients thoroughly before
watering.
-
Consistent watering is critical to your pots.
Water frequently the first 2 weeks. After that, soak the pots until
water comes out the bottom.
-
Make sure all the plants in your container like the
same amount of sun, shade and water.
